What Is Hypnosis?
|
Hypnosis...A Specific State of Mind
We have all experienced hypnotic trance without calling it by that name. For example, how often have you been driving in your car, with your mind on other things, and automatically wound up at your destination without consciously thinking about what route to take? Or become so deeply engrossed in a book or movie that you were totally unaware of your surroundings? These are everyday examples of hypnotic trance. When this happens, time seems to take on a different quality; we often refer to this state as being "in the zone."
Hypnosis is a specific state the brain enters into in which it becomes receptive to suggestion. While in hypnosis, it may seem like you are not in a hypnotic trance at all. Most people simply feel deeply relaxed. A brain scan would show a change in brain activity similar to the time just before you drop off to sleep, when your brainwaves slip into the alpha pattern.

A State of Heightened Focus...
This alpha state is a very pleasant, dreamy state of mind during which your mind becomes very open to suggestion. In this state, your mind is highly attuned to visualization and to the creation of inner sensory experiences. The more richly detailed these inner sensory experiences can become for your mind in this state, the more profound the lasting the effect will be after your session has ended.
The hypnotist or hypnotherapist (these terms are generally used interchangeably) acts as a guide, gently easing you into the alpha state. Your attention becomes be more focused than usual, filtering out external distractions. As the conscious mind becomes more relaxed, the subconscious mind comes to the forefront, able to make rapid changes in attitude and behavior. Many people report dramatic changes in eating or smoking habits...simply losing their desire for unhealthy foods or cigarettes.

Hypnosis Works Because It Doesn't Rely On Willpower...
Thought is the function of the conscious mind. Emotions and imagination, which are far more powerful motivators, reside in the subconscious. Willpower, with its reliance on logic and reason, is no match for the subconscious mind.
Human beings are driven by emotion, not by logic or reason. Habits, by definition, are repetitive behaviors, often rooted in emotion. This emotional component is why willpower is so often ineffective in changing negative habits such as smoking or overeating.
During hypnosis, the reasoning, critical, judgmental part of your mind is bypassed, and suggestions are given directly to your subconscious mind. Imagery and metaphor create the rich inner sensory experience that accelerates change. Hypnosis is the optimum state for making lasting changes in your life, allowing you to quickly and easily set aside old, limiting beliefs and replace them with new, empowering beliefs.
